Easy DIY baby blanket

This weekend I worked on a baby blanket for a friend of mine who is having a baby boy early summer.  Since I already have some burp cloths to give her, I thought it would be fun to try a new project and attempt a blanket.  I found this posting of a woman who made this blanket, and thought it sounded simple enough that even I could do it!

I found the fabric at JoAnn's and bought a yard of cotton fabric and a yard of the soft blue fabric.  I washed both before beginning the sewing project.  The cotton fabric needed to be ironed, but the blue did not.  Once the fabric was ready, here are the 3 easy steps to assemble (probably takes 20-30 minutes):
1) lay fabrics on top of each other - wrong side together
2) fold over edges and pin
3) sew around

This is a very quick tutorial, and I didn't take pictures as I went, so I'll be sure to take better step-by-step pictures next time around.  Here is the end result!

I can't wait to give this blanket away and see my friend's bundle of joy wrapped up in it when he comes!

UPDATE:  Here is another blanket that I made!

  2. Did the minky fabric (the blue) wash alright? Did you dry the blue fabric?

    1. The minky fabric actually washed up great! I did do it on a delicate cycle. A few of the ends were a little frayed, so I just cut those off. I also dried it all the way and had no problems with it. The nice thing about this fabric is it doesn't really wrinkle, which is good because I was advised if I took an iron to it, it may melt, so dry and it's ready to sew!

  3. Question....Do you tack the middle of the blankets or are they ok without it. And....would you add batting to the middle Thank you! I have all the material to make this for my nephew coming in January. VERY EXCITED. But wanted to know this before I start. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    1. Hi! I didn't use batting or bother pinning it in the middle. Hopefully it will turn out with you not needing either of those. I'd love to hear how yours turns out so please share!

    2. Can you tell me how much of each material you used for this project. Thinking of making one for our newest addition.
